Growth Hormones in Food

Western diet:

People in Western countries particularly USA, have meat and milk for their diet more than other items. Suppliers of these products add hormones to increase both production and quality. Every one knows that Hormone growth promotants ( HGP s ) are used for achieving livestock in large quantities as well. For this reason in USA, FDA permits giving harmonic injections to cattle. These hormones are meant to boost production as well as profit for the dairy suppliers, but we should also look in to our health.

Let`s take a look at hormones in the first case:

Hormones come as natural supplements which emit chemical reaction in the body that affects the functions of the organs. We require these hormones for our development and women in particular require them for giving birth to a child. Milk produced from Cow has hormones that are good for health. But the real concern comes when we think of hormones that are synthetic, and injected in the cattle`s body.

Milk containing growth hormones:

In the period 1930-40 we saw the initial injection of hormones in cattle when bovine somatotropin ( BST ) was used to boost production of milk. This hormone is produced by the pituitary glands in cows that work with hormones of other kinds to produce milk. In the period 1980-90 a record was achieved in boosting production of milk by using rBGH ( Recombinant Bovine growth hormone ).

Beef containing growth hormones:

In 1956 DES ( diethyllstilbestrol ) was injected to cattle to make them grow fat and give meat more quickly. This process ensured meat supply at a faster rate as well. FDA has recommended the following in ensuring more supply: Hormone Growth Promotants ( HJPs ) - 6 types Natural hormones - Testosterone, Oestradiol, Progesterone Synthetic hormones - Trenbolone, Melengestrol, Zeranol

Growth hormones in food:

When we inject hormones in cows, a smaller residue of these hormones pass on to the meat and dairy products extracted from the cow. We do not have any study that determines the effect of consuming these products. But still there are some dangers that have been found and are listed as below:

  1. Lowers the teenage years in both girls and boys

  2. Women are subject to breast cancer

  3. Men are subject to prostate cancer

There are environmental issues that still concern people who are in to the research. Hormones not only pass on to food products but also on to cow`s manure. When such manure passes on to rivers, it affects the life of fish and other aquatic animals. Since then the advisory body of European Union ( EU ) had strictly restricted using hormones with food substances and imports of beef products from USA to protect their peoples` health.

Messenger Hormones

Hormones are the messengers that allow each cell in our body to communicate with each other. Millions of messages are sent between cells at lightening speed that allow your body to function and for each cell to respond to the ever changing environment within.

Hormones are produced naturally by the body but in some cases, in order to give us the instant gratification we demand, doctors supplement with synthetic hormones.

Synthetic hormones have been linked to the increasing instances of breast cancer and prostate cancer in particular and continued research into the effects of synthetic hormones is producing alarming results.

Many people are not aware that hormones are in the medication that they take, the most common being "the pill", which is being given to children from a young age, not only to prevent pregnancy but to deal with issues like teenage acne, premenstrual tension symptoms.

Studies have shown that exposure to some plastics, pesticides and other chemicals, increases hormonal activity in the body and is resulting in young girls as young as three years of age in some instances and as young as eight years of age in a higher frequency, beginning to experience menstrual cycles or menstrual like symptoms.

Hormones are widely used to help people who are experiencing menopause in treatments called HRT or hormone replacement therapy. Essentially, healthy cell membranes send out messages to lure the required hormone molecules that are needed for it to function effectively.

It is essential to explore natural ways of improving and detoxifying the body of free radicals and other pollutants that affect the health of your cell membranes as opposed to bombarding your cells with synthetic hormones in the hope that they will stick.

Diet and lifestyle play an important role in the healthy functioning of your cells and if you are in the position where synthetic hormones have been prescribed, you should also take a look at what you are putting into your body that could be affecting the ability of your cells to attract hormones.

Stay away from pesticides in your food as well as your home environment.
Eat a healthy diet with a good variety of fruits and vegetables.
Include Soy and tofu products in your diet.
Licorice, aniseed and St johns wort have also been shown assist in cell membrane repair.

In essence, we must all take more care of what we expose ourselves to, in the form of processed foods, chemicals and use common sense to stay away from products that are potentially harmful. A good rule of thumb would be to ask yourself if the product you are about to consume has been modified in any way. If it has, look for a natural alternative.

This article is written in the hope that you will take more care of your body, not simply accept chemical medications but question the availability of natural alternatives or natural products, which, through a regime of diet could make a dramatic improvement to your quality of life.

Increase Height Naturally - How to Do it After 20 Or Even 25

Ever wanted to be taller? Do you know that even at the age of 25, you can still grow taller? What makes it even better is that you can do it naturally and safely. Here, several tips and exercises will be given to gain height regardless of age.

There are a lot of ways to increase height naturally. Increasing the levels of growth hormones in the body is one of the most important things. And if you are a teenager, you need not worry about this because it is at this point that you produce growth hormones in large quantities and automatically.

For those aged above 20 on the other hand will need to force the production of their growth hormone. One great way to do this is through stretching exercises. Stretching is very essential in increasing height naturally since stretching produces lactate which is an important factor in making the production of the growth hormone active.

When the growth hormone levels of the body are increase, this will make the body's cartilages thicker and the density levels of the bone which results to height gain. Combining a right diet and the stretching exercises will even be more effective. Eating right will help strengthen your bones which can help in lengthening your bones. The foods that are useful in increasing height are fiber rich foods like wheat brans, wheat, rice, oats and the like.

Among these foods, the other foods that are beneficial in growing taller are vegetables such as, spinach, carrots, salad greens, and broccoli. Steamed fish and citrus fruits are also helpful. While these food promote height gain, you will need to avoid foods that are high in fats and sweets. Also lessen your alcohol and coffee intakes.

On top of the stretching exercises, yoga is also a type of exercise that promotes height gain. It promotes balance and flexibility at the same time releases the strain and tension on the back and the spine which helps in making the cartilage of your body thicker and the muscles stronger. Yoga is also useful in promoting good posture which stretches the spine.

The different yoga positions that can help in increasing one's height are Tarhasana, Sheershasana and the Matsyasana. And one thing that you should always keep in mind to be taller is by getting enough rest as this allows your body to promote the growth hormone appropriately. Studies have shown that larger quantities of growth hormone are produced while sleeping.

It would be better to sleep longer than the usual to help stimulate and increase the production of the growth hormones in your body. Before anything else or before you try these exercises out to increase your height naturally, it is best that you consult your doctor first to make sure that you are healthy enough to do so. With the proper discipline and persistence and these exercises, gaining height will be very easy.

Natural Hormone Balance With Chinese Medicine and Acupuncture

Our bodies' hormones exist in a delicate balance with one another, and correcting imbalances can be a tricky thing to achieve. In order to understand what exactly we are dealing with, let's take a closer look at our endocrine system, the bodies' messaging system. Then we will further examine how Chinese Medicine can help to balance the female hormones in order to address a variety of common women's health disorders.

The Endocrine System Creates and Distributes Messages

Our Endocrine systems are a fascinating and complex thing to look at. What is the function of this system? The endocrine system is comprised of a series of glands whose job is to produce and distribute hormones. Hormones are one of of our bodies primary messaging systems, and they coordinate our body's physiological activities, much like a symphony conductor coordinates all the musical instruments to create a harmonic performance.

Our key players are the Hypothalamus and the Pituitary gland. This pair of glands regulates the other glands of the body including the adrenals, thyroid, and sex organs. The Hypothalamus and Pituitary team up with several different key glandular players to form multi-functional "Axis'" that work to regulate very important processes of the body. Here are the three major axis' and their functions:

Hypothalamus-Pituitary-Gonad-Think 'Reproduction'

Regulates male and female reproductive systems. Problems with this axis include infertility, menstrual irregularities, endometriosis, polycystic ovarian syndrome, sexual dysfunction and menopausal problems.

Hypothalamus-Pituitary-Thyroid-Think 'Metabolism'

Regulates metabolism and energy production and usage. Fatigue, weight gain, emotional disorders, anxiety, and insomnia and heart palpitations indicate problems here.

Hypothalamus-Pituitary-Adrenal-Think 'Stress & Digest'

Regulates a wide variety of activities including stress response, digestive function, immunity, emotions and energy. Problems with this axis may present as fatigue, IBS or other organ functional disorders, insomnia, emotional disturbances, and alcoholism.

TCM View of Hormonal Effects

Chinese Medicine developed a different twist on the perspective of hormones and where they come from. The endocrine system is the basic equivalent of the Kidney system in TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine). It is responsible for maintaining functions related to genital, urinary, endocrine, bone, blood and central nervous system. The Kidney is our most basic energy source and is primarily responsible for reproduction, growth and development of the body.

How Can Chinese Medicine Help With Women's Hormonal Balance?

Chinese medicine excels at balancing the hormones of the women's body and is an effective treatment for regulating menstrual disorders, treating menopausal symptoms, and addressing infertility. It is also great for addressing mood swings, stress, low libido and poor energy.

Treatment begins with a full heath intake in which we formulate a Chinese medical diagnosis and then go from there. Every woman's body is different and will be treated in an individualized method, unlike Western medicine where a specific health disorder is treated the same with each patient. For example, an irregular menstrual cycle could stem from several different patterns depending on your body and what is going on with you. I will identify your unique pattern and treat you in a customized fashion.

Your treatment plan generally includes a combination of acupuncture treatments and customized herbal prescription and preparation. When you leave the office, you will be equipped with the knowledge of what the problem is, how we are going to treat it, and how frequently you will need treatment.

Using Herbal Formulas to Treat Hormone Imbalance

Chinese herbal formulas have been clinically proven to be effective in altering hormone levels in the body. A commonly used formula in the treatment of menopause, for example, known as Rhemmania Six alters female sex hormones by directly affecting the adrenal cortex, other endocrine glands, or both.

From a biomedical perspective, it has been reported that this formula increases plasma levels of cortisol (our stress-dealing hormone), increases estrodial (an estrogen derivative) and decreases overall FSH (follicle stimulating hormone) and LH (luteinizing hormone). It also increased estrogen receptors significantly. What does all of this mean? The overall effect of the above data indicates a balance of hormone levels resulting in reduction of menopausal symptoms.

Your herbal formula will be designed based on the symptoms you may be experiencing. From a TCM perspective, we would treat imbalances in the Kidney system. I will prepare a formula for you based on your TCM diagnosis that is completely customized for your body using powdered herbs that can be combined to address both your symptomatic picture and your root causal disorder. In other words, we will treat both your symptoms so that you feel better, but we will also be addressing the underlying cause of your symptoms so that your body cab find balance again.

Using Acupuncture to Treat Hormonal Imbalance

Your acupuncture treatment will focus on balancing the systems of the body that are unbalanced by exerting a strong homeostatic effect utilizing the nervous and hormonal systems. You will likely be treated for imbalances in the Kidney and Liver systems in order sedate your nervous system and balance endocrine function.

Your acupuncture regimen will include weekly treatments until the symptomatic presentations have dissipated, then a monthly maintenance treatment schedule will be established to prevent your symptoms from returning. Once we have have achieved maintenance, you may come in for preventative care if you wish.

If you or someone you know is dealing with hormonal imbalances such as menstrual pain or irregularity, menopause, infertiliy, low libido or poor energy, please refer them to my office for a free consultation.

10 Possible Reasons Why You're Having Trouble Getting Pregnant And 10 Ways To Increase Your Chances

So you want to get pregnant? You may be wondering what's taking so long. "Why does it seem so difficult?" you may ask. "Why can't I seem to get pregnant?"

I had all these questions and more. I wanted to know how to get pregnant fast.

First, let's talk about the odds of getting pregnant in any given monthly cycle. One study cited a couple's chance of getting pregnant within the first month of trying at about 25%, while 60% will get pregnant within 6 months, 75% within 9 months, 80% within 1 year, and 90% of couples get pregnant within 18 months of trying.

Now let's talk about the factors that may be affecting your fertility and your partner's fertility. In other words, what's hindering your chances of getting pregnant fast?

Here are the 10 most likely causes of infertility issues followed by some conception tips to help increase your odds of getting pregnant faster.

1. Smoking. If you or your partner smoke cigarettes, this will greatly hinder your trying-to-conceive efforts. Women who smoke are 60% more likely than non-smokers to be infertile. Medical research indicates that egg depletion and sperm damage caused by smoking is the cause for this decrease in fertility. Smoking is very bad for your health anyway, so this should give you a worthwhile incentive to quit for your own health and those around you. An unborn baby is at a high risk for many complications if the mother is a smoker. Also, if your partner smokes around you, you are affected by the second-hand smoke, which is very harmful as well. Remember that with over 2,000 different chemicals in tobacco smoke, not one of them is nutritious or enriching for you or your baby.

2. Illicit Drug Use or Alcohol Use. This may seem like a "no brainer" for most of us, but some women and men need to be reminded that illicit drug use is a no-no for those trying to conceive. Marijuana use specifically suppresses hormone production, which can cause decreased sperm count and possible erectile dysfunction in men and irregular periods in women. Alcohol in moderation may not significantly affect fertility, but if you want to definitely increase your chances of getting pregnant sooner rather than later, it's best to avoid alcohol completely (both the woman and the man).

3. Caffeine Intake. Caffeine is believed to reduce fertility. It also is believed to be risky during pregnancy with an increased risk of miscarriage with more than very mild use. Caffeine's effect on fertility and pregnancy is controversial - some believe it to be harmful in even small quantities and others believe it is fine with moderate use (up to three cups of coffee per day). But why take a chance, especially if you want to conceive quickly and avoid a potential miscarriage? Caffeine is in chocolate, coffee, tea, and most sodas. Even decaffeinated coffee and tea (black and green) has a small amount of caffeine, so be aware of this when drinking. If you truly want to get pregnant more quickly, you should give up caffeine altogether for a better chance of increasing fertility. If it's too hard and you have a caffeine addiction, then wean down gradually in order to make it easier on yourself.

4. Poor Diet. What you eat or don't eat is crucial to your overall well-being and reproductive health. Getting pregnant is a complex process, one that requires many different body organs and glands to function properly to have proper hormonal balance and functioning. Most people don't get the recommended daily allowance of fruits and vegetables and water per day. This is very basic, but it's crucial to pay attention to in order to help increase your fertility and your chances of getting pregnant more quickly. Eat lots of green leafy vegetables (leaf lettuce, kale, collard greens, etc.), whole grains (oatmeal, whole grain breads, brown rice, etc.), raw nuts (almonds, Brazil nuts, walnuts, cashews, etc.), and a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables. Organic is best, and fresh is better than canned or processed. (Note that Brazil nuts are especially good for sperm health).

5. Lack of Exercise. If you're sedentary, get moving. It will help you feel better, lose weight if needed, and will improve your fertility and chance of getting pregnant. Walking, swimming, biking, or aerobics are great forms of exercise. Do something that you enjoy, and it will be easier to keep up. Exercise at least 3 times a week for 20-30 minutes at a time.

6. Obesity or Being Overweight. If your BMI is greater than 25, you are considered overweight and are prone to health risks. A BMI of 30 or more is considered obese. Avoid fad diets or skipping meals. It has been proven that starving yourself only makes things worse. Do eat, but eat smaller portions more often, and cut out the junk food. Start slowly if you need to, but definitely start.

7. Stressful Lifestyle. If you have a stressful work environment, consider changing jobs. Stress will not only affect your fertility, it will affect your overall health and place you at greater risk for heart disease and many other health problems. Also, do what you can to relax often (at least once a day). Practice deep breathing to help relieve stress. What I do is inhale as deeply as I can with my mouth closed. Then I exhale slowly through my mouth. This is an instant stress reliever for me. Try it and see what it does for you! Another stress reliever can be a leisurely walk, especially if it's something you enjoy and is in a beautiful environment. Go with your mate and use it to catch up on events of the day or just to dream of your future together. A warm bath can also be a great stress reliever, just don't make it too warm, especially for the males, as it could affect sperm quality and quantity.

8. Advanced Age. Advanced age is widely considered to be age 35 and older. Women who are 35 years old and older do have somewhat of a disadvantage when trying to conceive. It is said that a female is born with the total amount of eggs she will have her entire life. Thus, at age 35 and beyond, her eggs are considerably "older" than they were in her 20's, making it more difficult to conceive. That said, those of us who are older need to be even more diligent to be optimally healthy in order to increase our changes of getting pregnant faster. Men can be affected by age as well, especially as libido tends to decrease with age. I have found maca to be a wonderful libido enhancer and also fertility promoter. It is said to improve the quality of a woman's eggs as well. I believe it helped me to get pregnant at 39 and carry my beautiful, perfectly health baby boy to full term.

9. Poor Intercourse Timing. In order to conceive, a couple needs to have intercourse near the woman's ovulation time - the closer the better. If a couple just has intercourse "whenever", their chances of getting pregnant are not as good. Especially for the older couples in their late 30's to 40's, timing is crucial to getting pregnant faster. To get the timing right, you need to determine your ovulation date.

I like to track my cycles by using a basal thermometer. This thermometer is different from the regular thermometer used to determine a fever. A basal thermometer is an ultra-sensitive thermometer that tracks your body's most minute temperature shift and helps you calculate ovulation. Another means I like for determining ovulation date is an ovulation predictor kit (OPK). There are two kinds - the urine strips and also the fertility monitors. The strips are like a pregnancy test stick, only they measure LH (or luteinizing hormone) instead of the pregnancy hormone. The fertility monitors use saliva to determine your most fertile period by showing a ferning pattern when you're most likely to conceive.

10. Physical Issues. There are many physical issues that can hinder your chances of getting pregnant. Eating right, exercising, losing weight, and quitting bad habits can greatly help to heal many of these conditions. Sometimes medical intervention is necessary, though. These conditions can include irregular menstrual cycles, anovulation (lack of ovulation), PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome), endometriosis, low sperm motility or mobility, low sperm count, or luteal phase defect, among others.

I suggest that you get some prenatal tests done for you and your partner. If you've been trying to get pregnant for six months or more, especially if you're 35 or older, see a reproductive endocrinologist. He or she will help you to decide which testing is best for you and your partner. Semen analysis will most likely be helpful to determine sperm health. And the woman's symptoms will help to determine what tests are performed for her. Prenatal testing is very beneficial even if you want to get pregnant naturally. If you know what your condition is, you're more likely to be able to overcome it.

If this article has helped you, please consider sharing it with someone you know who would benefit also.

Love and Despair - Recovering From a Break-Up

When we are in love, the world is golden and nothing gets us down. When we are out of love, we are desperate to regain those feelings we had while in love. The desperation can be so intense, we find ourselves thinking and doing things we would be ashamed to tell our best friend. The excitement of falling in love, being in love, is not just a thrilling psychological and emotional experience. It is as well a bio-chemical experience, what might be called a "high," and there are resemblances to a chemical addiction, and withdrawal, which become evident when we break-up. Some of the neuro-chemicals in the brain associated with being in, and out, of love are 'dopamine,' 'serotonin,' 'neuroepeniphrine,' 'adrenaline' and 'phenylethylamine.' Depending on the level of these chemicals in the blood, we can be ecstatic, or terribly depressed. Some research has shown a similarity in blood chemistry and neural activity in regions of the brain between people in the first stages of love, the infatuation phase, and Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder.

Most people are aware of 'testosterone' and 'estrogen.' These hormones, along with 'pheremones' are largely responsible for sexual attraction. Pheremones are hormones that are excreted or secreted, rather than remain internal. We often find ourselves attracted to (or repelled by) a person based on their scent. That scent is secreted or excreted chemicals, i.e., pheremones, Although pheremones and hormones may ignite the initial spark of a relationship, they aren't able to maintain a relationship. The hormones 'oxytocin' and 'vasopressin' are released in the body during the heights and climax of sexual intercourse and reinforce the attachment and bonding that occurs from physical intimacy. If a couple were to meet and fall in love, and then take some medication that dampened these love chemicals, they would find themselves rather indifferent about their affections for each other. After years, or decades, of marriage, couples fall out of love due in large part to the waning of these chemicals. One or both partners may seek extra marital affairs to again feel the thrilling flow of those hormones through the blood. The despair we experience after a break-up is not because we are estranged from our loved one, but because the love chemicals in the blood are no longer there, they have diminished, or vanished. If those same love chemicals could be injected back into the blood, we would feel more than fine. A good solid, stable relationship has built up a bond of affection based on the initial stages of love. That stable affection can then in turn reignite feelings of lust and romantic love, which reinforce the stable long-term relationship. In many love relationships, it is the initial thrill and excitement that is of most interest and when that begins to wane, sexual activity can become more adventurous, which can be a good thing; but it can become overly aggressive, and violent, as well. Affairs outside the primary relationship can develop. The term 'love addiction' or 'sex addiction' are appropriate because of the chemical basis for these obsessions. It is not the wild sex or the affair we are after, it is the chemicals such activities generate in the blood stream.

Many people seek out drugs, either prescribed medications or illegal substances, to help them cope with the despair of withdrawal that often arrives with a break-up or separation. This, of course, makes perfect sense since the feelings of being in love are chemical in nature. Some drugs can dampen the feelings of despair; some drugs can escalate the feelings of euphoria. Neither one of them is a truly satisfactory solution to the break-up. There is however, a healthy way of responding to the despair a break-up can leave us with:

1) Exercise. There is such a close proximity of the word 'exercise' to the word 'exorcise' that one has to consider exercise as a way of exorcising the demons of chemical imbalance. Exercise has been shown to release neuro-chemicals that make one happy, even ecstatic, without being in love with someone. It is in fact the same chemicals, but produced in a different context, a self initiated context, one that is not dependent upon another person. Exercise not only produces these happy chemicals, it teaches us that we can generate them on our own; we become more autonomous, more stable within ourselves. It's just a matter of doing it.

2) Proper Diet. Don't eat junk. If there is any truth to the adage 'we are what we eat,' then if we eat junk, we are going to become junk, and feel like junk. If you have just broken up from a love relationship, you already feel like junk. It doesn't help to compound the problem. Decide to eat well. Do your own little research project on what that would look like for you. Get to know your proteins, carbohydrates and fats.

3) Positive Focus. It's often found that before a person fell in love, they were doing well enough in life. They held a job, had a variety of activities they enjoyed, good friends, interests, hobbies... And then they met somebody... fell in love... and lost all focus on the elements that had made up their life in favor of this one person. That positive focus needs to be regained. Those elements of one's life gave it meaning, purpose and satisfaction. Reach out to friends, take up that hobby again, rekindle the interests that were enjoyable, fun and rewarding. It is an act of will and determination at first. But, you will soon find yourself in that good groove again. And, when you next find yourself in a love relationship, don't forego these important elements of your life.

4) Talk story. If you have a close friend, relative, or even parent, who is supportive, caring and non-judgmental, share with them your story. You may have neglected them in favor of your now non-partner, but you can reach out again to them. Share with them your thoughts and feelings. It can be very helpful. If you do not have such a support person in your life seek out professional counseling. By talking it out, you can objectify what has happened to you and that can help you see things more clearly.

5) Meditation. Take time to be by yourself.

a. A long solitary walk can do wonders for the soul. While walking, recall the blessings in your life, all the good things you have had, and have now. Breathe deeply and walk with confidence that you are a capable person able to meet the challenges that life brings to you around any corner.

b. Sitting quietly alone, without music, television or other distractions is healing. There is a saying 'feel it to heal it' and meditation can be the perfect opportunity to do just that. This type of meditation is not about gaining a peaceful state of mind, it is not about obtaining insight or enlightenment; it is about feeling the pain, not denying or avoiding the hurt but rather acknowledging it, even honoring it, as a human experience we are all prone to. During this kind of meditation, upsurges of emotion are to be expected. If the urge to cry emerges, it is to be allowed. Crying is one of the best ways of releasing pent up painful emotional energies. Don't be ashamed, don't be shy...let the healing balm of salt-water tears cry out....

c. Visualization is a form of meditation in which we see, clearly, in the mind's eye, with detail, an image of our choosing. Visualize yourself healthy, happy, friendly, understanding, strong and stable. Add affirmative statements to your visualizations that reinforce your worthiness and value as a person. Be aware that the mind does not register negative goals. That is, if you say, "I will no longer think about (name of person), the mind only hears "think about (name of person)." It does no register the 'I will no longer' part. So, you would rephrase it to say something like 'I now think clearly about my immediate tasks at hand."

6) Masturbation. This can be a sensitive topic; however, there is enough objective information based on decades of research to say it is both normal and healthy, for both sexes, at any time, not just after a break-up. As the writer/director/film-maker Woody Allen said in his classic movie "Annie Hall," "Don't knock masturbation, it's sex with somebody I love." Masturbation may be a necessary component of the 'withdrawal' from sexual activity with a partner. Furthermore, it is known to produce happy chemicals and reduce sexual stress and tension. If you are inhibited, anxious or concerned about this very common behavior, you may need to do some research and reading. There is plenty of reputable studies and sound advice out there.

7) Future Orientation. The mind is 'teleological' by design. That means it is goal directed. If you continue to think about the past, the mind will tend to take you in that direction. You will repeat old patterns, maintain old thoughts and beliefs. If you think about the future, where you are headed, the mind will focus in that direction. You will generate new thoughts, beliefs, perceptions and strategies to get you moving that way. Perhaps you have heard it said that 'the grass is greenest where it is watered the most.' Focus on what you want, not what you don't want. Focus on your goals, not on your obstacles. Focus on your successes, not on your mistakes or failures. Focus on your strengths, not your weaknesses.

8) Know yourself. Self-knowledge is a life long developmental task. Recognize the break-up or separation despair you feel now as part of the self-knowledge curriculum. And, consider the love you have lost, and the despair you have found, as a stepping-stone to an expanded self-awareness, and a greater capacity for compassion. There are clearly risks in a love relationship. You can be hurt, even devastated. And yet, new life does rise up out of the ashes. Although you may think your heart is broken and you can never love again, your heart can also be viewed as opened, for, indeed, a broken heart is an opened heart, and able to become more capable of loving, and being loved, than it has ever been before.

The Truth About Low Testosterone In Women

Believe it or not, testosterone for women is vital for their health and well-being.

Low testosterone in women along with symptoms it causes has been downplayed and brushed aside for years because this hormone was always associated with "male-ness." Nowadays, it's becoming more mainstream and accepted that women indeed can suffer from a deficiency of this hormone and such a deficiency can seriously impact their health.

The three primary sex hormones circulating in a woman's body are oestrogen, progesterone, and testosterone. But for the sake of this article, we are only interested in the problem of low testosterone in women.

Testosterone hormone is manufactured naturally by the ovaries and the adrenal glands.

Whereas the first two sex hormones (meaning oestrogen and progesterone) drop dramatically at menopause, the decline of testosterone in women is a gradual process occurring from the ages of 20 to 40.

By age 40, the testosterone in women is half of what it was at age 20. Menopause does not change testosterone levels. However, removal of the ovaries does cause testosterone levels to drop by as much as 50 per cent.

Symptoms of low testosterone in women include loss of sexual desire, lack of sexual responsiveness and weaker orgasms. Other manifestations are lack of energy, decrease in strength and endurance, and diminishing ability to perform work. It can also cause the bones to weaken and heighten the risk for developing osteoporosis.

Obviously, based on the potential symptoms above, inadequate amounts of this hormone can lead to less enjoyment in life. A surprising and lesser known fact about having low testosterone for women is that it causes fat cells to store more fat through a surplus of what are termed alpha receptors and a lack of beta receptors in the fat cells.

Testosterone replacement therapy can be utilized to treat low testosterone in women just as it can in men. One factor that must be taken into consideration is that naturally occurring levels of testosterone for women are only one tenth to one twentieth of that of a man's. While men normally produce 20 ml per day, women only average production of around 2 ml per day.

Several methods are employed to treat female testosterone deficiency. Testosterone patches have been developed. These patches are new and quite effective.

Sublingual tablets can be placed under the tongue. Or a topical gel can be applied to clean dry skin to address the problem. This second form of therapy has the advantage that it is released 24 hours a day. A thick gel is also available to be applied in a lentil (pea) size to the vulva area to treat low testosterone in women an hour before bedtime.

Intramuscular injection has been used since the 1940's. This form is very effective but has the disadvantage of needing to be repeated every two weeks and can be painful. Also it does not release in a constant manner with time. One way to supplement testosterone in women is through the use of testosterone pellets. These pellets are inserted under the skin of the lower abdomen with a 1 to 2 cm incision. This form of enhancing testosterone in women needs to be repeated every 120 days.

Therapy for low testosterone in women will increase feelings of well-being, sense of personal power and sex drive. The supplementation of testosterone in women helps make women more easily sexually aroused, allows them to enjoy intercourse better and increases frequency of orgasms.
