Hair Loss In Women - Is It Your Hormones?

Although you don't hear about hair loss in women on a regular basis, it is a very common problem among women of all ages. There are several factors that may contribute to the loss of hair in a woman. Environmental factors may play a role, your diet, overall health, chemotherapy, etc. With so many possible causes, it can be difficult to determine what is actually causing your hair loss. It can also be a scary experience as women will naturally feel as though something serious may be going on. Before you panic, you should first rule out the less serious or more natural causes of hair loss in women. Often, a woman's hormones are to blame. You should always consult your doctor if you are experiencing any unusual hair loss, but the following warning signs may help ease your mind and possibly indicate that your hormones are the cause.

  • Shedding or losing more than 100 hairs per day. You may notice excessive shedding when washing your hair.

  • Thinning hair at your temples, crown, and vertex. Your vertex is the pointed part at the back of your head.

  • Thinning of your ponytail, or widening of your natural part.

  • Scalp is becoming increasingly visible on the top of your head.

  • Hairdresser no longer thins your hair when you have it cut.

  • Itching, burning or sores on your scalp.

  • Presence of other hormonal skin changes such as persistent acne, increased body or facial hair.
